INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
LOCAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT IN PRAXIS

Congress Centrum Halle Münsterland, Münster, Germany
18 april 2007

Introduction

Chaos!! Chaos!! That is the only proper description one can give talking about a disaster. Organizing this disaster is the most important task when a disaster stucks a city or municipality. The responsible person(s) has to do the right things at the right moment but also has to find answers on questions such as: What kind of relief should you offer the victims? What should be done about aftercare? What about rebuilding? How do you cope with the media circus? And in more general terms: what does crisis management really consist of?

In co-operation with the Council of Europe and the Dutch Section of Municipalities and Regions, the European Forum of Local and Regional Disaster Management was established in2005. The most important objectives are:
- to provide an European Forum in which elected officials and public servants can get together in order to exchange experiences and dillemmas relating to disaster management at local and regional level, and give each other feedback regarding their own position and role;
-to promote and facilitate education and training sessions in the area of disaster management at local and regional level.

During a international conference on 18 November 2007 in Münster, several mayors and chiefs of police will exchanges their experiences they have gained when a disaster stucks their village/city.
